How to Choose the Best Rugs and Runners: Create a Checklist

Some people make the mistake of rug shopping before taking the proper measurements or planning as carefully as they should. Poor planning results in ill-fitting rugs and runners that do not function well or look good. In order to find the best floor coverings for your home, refer to this checklist before placing your order.

  • Measure the area. Rugs and runners are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, so it's important to make your selections based on the dimensions of the entire room. They should help define the space without overwhelming it, so make sure you don't go too small or too large.

  • Coordinate with your existing décor. Rugs can have a big visual impact on a room – they can bring out the undertones in other pieces or stand out on their own as a major eye-catcher. They don't have to match the colours of the room exactly, but they should be in the same colour family and flow with the style of the rest of the house. Do you have traditional furniture? Try Oriental rugs. If, on the other hand, you have a more contemporary style, look for modern rugs.

  • Determine your budget. Purchasing rugs and runners without a budget in mind could turn out to be a costly mistake. The most wallet-friendly way to shop for new floor coverings is to figure out how much you want to spend on them. This way you can narrow down your options quickly and easily, and avoid the problem of overspending before it's too late.
